Millins-Horne Consulting

Safety ~ Welfare ~ Infrastructure ~ Projects ~ New Builds
When only the personal approach is good enough

Why Millins-Horne Consulting?

Are you fed up with safety and infrastructure consultants who leave you with an incomprehensible audit document and a long lists of actions, then send you a bill with a sizable quotation for additional work for them to put it all right?

Experience a different kind of consultant who believes in true client empowerment with a focus on educating and supporting you and your workforce so that you can take back ownership of your safety and infrastructure systems while still having all that expertise and back up only a phone call away.

At Millins-Horne Consulting we believe in finding relevant solutions that meet the real needs of the client and not ones that overburden organisations and their all important staff with outdated and time consuming processes.

Jackie Millins-Horne

Principal Consultant DipNEBOSH

As the Principal Consultant for Millins-Horne Consulting I will always be your first point of contact. My goal is to get to know you and your organisation as quickly as possible, understand where your current journey has taken you and find out what your key objectives are. From there together we will explore pathways through involvement, planning, resources and implementation to create a bespoke solution that creates compliance, delivers your project, adds value to your organisation and leaves you in control. With extensive experience across private and public sector education, youth organisations, charities and many other areas you can be assured that we will understand, we will listen and we will deliver what you really want.

Experienced Professionals

Trained professionals with over 25 years experience in working with the education, charities and youth sectors here to assist you throughout your project and beyond.

Unique Approach

Every client has bespoke needs. One size fits all is not in our vocabulary. Every safety management system, project delivery or infrastructure solution is unique; as it should be.

Bespoke Training

Training needs should be assessed and the content and styles of delivery governed by the client. In consultation with our clients we can deliver courses for one person to 200 and present them as lectures or innovative interactive and often highly entertaining sessions. We can also recommend the use of a first class safety e-learning platform and offer significant discounts to our clients should they wish to use the system.

Resources

Whether you need help with policy frameworks, templates for areas such as risk assessments and compliance or inspection, audit and reporting strategies, we can help by developing efficient, user friendly documentation that works for you and your staff and does not create a deluge of paper and unworkable data.

About
Millins-Horne Consulting

It's simple, I have a passion. I am passionate that people should be able to go to work everyday and return home safely having spent a day in an environment that does not hurt them nor make them ill. I am passionate that Directors, Trustees and Senior Leaders commit to safety and lead the way in an inclusive environment where everyone is part of the safety management system. I want the building that you are employed in to not only be safe, but be built compliantly and meet the needs of your organisation and I still want you to be able to do your job and not let safety or compliance get in the way. Safety is a tool not a weapon and if it is getting in the way, we are doing it incorrectly. I believe in being risk responsible and not risk adverse, a fundamental belief I carry forward in the youth work I am involved in, including various adventurous activities!

Millins-Horne Consulting was born while working in a number of schools and youth organisations where I realised that the support that had once been in place for these establishments, through local authorities and other relevant bodies, was quickly disappearing with each round of budget constraints. Academisation and other such strategies meant that these organisations were finding themselves out on a limb with responsibilities for facilities, safety and compliance as well as managing new building projects, often on a large scale. Without training and knowledge many areas had fallen by the wayside, buildings were being finished that needed much post occupational work to make them usable and sadly a number of organisations found themselves on the wrong side during civil claims and enforcement actions from authoritative bodies.

It is well known that such organisations struggle financially and so the cost of outside expertise in these fields was often out of reach. It was at this juncture that Millins-Horne Consulting took its place in the sector to offer advice and cost effective solutions that enabled schools and others to access realistically priced help with the sole objective being to eventually manage these areas themselves.

The business has grown swiftly over the last few years and with our continued drive to offer up to date and best practice solutions the future is bright and very busy; a hive of new ideas and lots and lots of energy - just the way we like it!

Our portfolio of clients now includes many schools, educational trusts and other youth organisations, as well as industrial clients. All part of the family of Millins-Horne Consulting who have learnt that there is a better, self regulating and cost effective way to complete projects and embed safety at the heart of their business.

I have worked with Jackie for nearly a year now. She has been invaluable in supporting Future Academies on all matters Covid, including
setting up a template for us to use to draft Risk Assessments for our 9 schools in London and Hertfordshire, and also engaging with each of our Principals and listening to their concerns and giving good advice.

She provides an excellent service, in particular the ability to take my calls on a wide range of questions on Covid, and be able to provide a practical answer over the phone straight away which works in an education environment.
Her background in teaching allows her to understand the challenges that we are facing, and to give school specific advice, rather than just generic advice, where we would have to tailor the advice to suit our schools.

By visiting our academies and reviewing our Risk Assessments, she has highlighted actions that we needed to take which have been very helpful to our commitment to keep our students and staff safe.

Her depth and breadth of knowledge, and desire to make the Covid arrangements work for our students and staff, are very much appreciated

I have worked closely with Jackie Millins-Horne as our health and safety consultant since I joined Global Academy in April 2018. In all this time I have found her advice and guidance, clear and appropriate to meet the needs of the Academy. More recently during the current Covid situation, her knowledge and experience has been invaluable. It has helped the Academy and its community manage to maintain operational and more so, continue to offer a high quality of education, whilst not jeopardising the safety of the community.
Jackie is always prompt with responses and is very reliable.

Jackie has been a real asset to the academy in particular during the very difficult COVID 19 times, her extensive knowledge and professionalism enables us to progress with great confidence. She has provided very valuable advice and guidance to help the school carry out its H & S functions effectively and efficiently. She is happy to provide guidance at any time not just during her scheduled visit days, we are very appreciative of all her help, particularly in the last year. She has a very personable approach, she has taken the time to understand the specific challenges at our academy and after thought and careful consideration, helped to provide simple and realistic improvements which can easily be implemented school-wide. It has been fantastic to have Jackie on hand in reaction to COVID-19, with her extensive knowledge and safeguarding processes, which can be easily adopted to help keep our staff and young people safe at school. We are very grateful that we have Jackie as a member of the team at Global.

Jackie has been an absolute God-send for Greenhouse Sports. I took on the Health and Safety responsibilities for Greenhouse 3 years ago and during that time we have implemented significant developments to our delivery which all have substantial implications for our Health and Safety requirements. Without Jackie’s wealth of experience and her practical approach to supporting us I know that Greenhouse Sports would not be in the confident and comfortable position we are in today. This safety net she has helped us create allows us to be creative and flexible in our approach to supporting the vulnerable young people we work with, maximising the benefit we can give our beneficiaries.

In 2018 Greenhouse Sports refurbished a large Grade II* listed church in order to open the Greenhouse Centre, a community sports centre in the heart of Westminster for the local community and wider London residents. The Greenhouse Centre was the first time the charity had taken on the responsibility of managing and running a facility and without Jackie’s support and guidance we would not have been able to set up effective safety monitoring systems or establish appropriate relationships with facilities management suppliers.

In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, we were able to respond quickly to the safety measures required by government and continue delivering sport to vulnerable young people across London. I am confident to say that without the work Jackie had done with us in the years leading up to this, and the knowledge that she was accessible to ask question of throughout COVID planning, we would not have been able to set up our delivery so safely and quickly.

Jackie has been instrumental in helping us embed a healthy culture of safety across the organisation. She can turn what feels like an intimidating subject in to something that is manageable and integrated into our every day activities. And above all, she is great fun to work with; she always brings energy and a can do attitude. Thank you Jackie!

I write on behalf of all the governors of Hertswood Academy to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for the commendable job you have done to support Hertswood and, in particular, the Academy Manager during the past 4 months of the Covid-19 restrictions.

The Principal and Academy Manager have kept us updated on the numerous ways in which Hertswood has had to adapt and operate in order to support students and staff both in school and at home.

It is abundantly clear that the risk assessments aligned to ensure Covid-19 compliance, and developed under your expert guidance and advice, have been critical for the reassurance of staff and governors.

We also heard this week of the very high percentage of Year 10 students who have returned to school - much of that will have been down to the confidence that parents have in knowing that Herstwood has done all it can to minimise the risk to those in school.

As much as it has been rewarding to see that our investment in IT over the last couple of years has proved to be invaluable for remote working and learning during lockdown, it is also comforting to know that our contract and relationship with you has been equally worthwhile.

These have been unprecedented times with what seems like a constant stream of revised guidance and regulation from central government. One might be forgiven for struggling to keep abreast of developments but governors have been confident that health and safety at Hertswood has been at the forefront.

This all adds up to making Hertswood Academy an even better place for our community as we head along the path of recovery.

"I have known Jackie and worked with her since 1997.
Jackie is always my first point of contact for advise and training concerning any Health and Safety issue.
Over the years I have relied on her outstanding expertise and experience in several schools (state and independent); academies; UTCs; a Multi Academy Trust and charitable organisations.
Her portfolio of skills is vast and her knowledge base is phenomenal.
She is able to offer support on cases from construction to personal injury and much, much, more.
Jackie is proactive and will always try to empower individuals and organisation to self-manage Health and Safety issues following her guidance and training. She is as much at ease producing and reviewing documentation to training groups of adults (and young people) as contributing to Committee and Board meetings.
Jackie has always ensured that the institutions and organisations that I work with are safe and compliant.
I cannot recommend her work highly enough.

We have used the services of M-H Consulting since 2009 and I have worked closely with Jackie Millins-Horne for 7 years.

She has an excellent approach to customer service and her passion and enthusiasm for Health & Safety is reflected in her delivery. She is very generous with her time and offers bespoke training.

Jackie Millins–Horne’s Health & Safety advice is always practical, professional and sound. I have worked with Jackie for more than ten years and would recommend her work to others. Her knowledge of the law and best practice in this area (in our case schools) has proved invaluable. She guides and encourages organisations to make incremental improvements to their Health and Safety systems and documentation and provides them with tools and training to do this and helps to identify priorities.

"Jackie was asked to support Sunnyfields Primary School after their Health and Safety Audit outcome was requires improvement. Jackie responded to the request promptly and met with the Deputy Head. Jackie has excellent knowledge in the area of health and safety which she was able to share in a clear and comprehensive way. Jackie was able to address all the issues highlighted in the report through her expert knowledge and by sign posting where to find examples of paperwork or training.
Jackie shared examples of risk assessments and policies for the school to adapt to their setting. As a result of the meeting with Jackie the school achieved 94% in their next Health and Safety Audit."
